What Is Syllable By Syllable Spelling?

Just as the words indicate, spelling by syllable breaks a word down into its syllabic parts.

In addition, right after each syllable the number of letters in the syllable is written as a superscript.

To make it easy on the eyes, leave a space between each syllable as well.

Why Syllable Spelling Works

1. Focus on the Smaller Part

Poor spellers often write a word the way it sounds. If you write a ten letter word with nine letters right, it looks about right to them. Then it's off to the next word.

They studied it wrong. They didn't even see the problem.

By focusing on syllables, they see the smaller part. Most syllables are only made of a few letters. The problem area becomes easier to identify.

2. They Count the Letters After Writing

See the word. See which combination it uses in the difficult syllable.

4. Highlight the Problem Combination

Most words have only one problem. Use a colored highlighter to point out that tricky combination. Or use a colored pencil to underline it.

Or just circle it.

Students drill down to the actual spelling pattern that is used in that word.
