Lion To Guard Us Maps

The Lion to Guard Us maps track the action in Clyde Robert Bulla's historical fiction novel.

London to Jamestown

Lion to Guard Us World Map

Locate England and Virginia on the world map.

The distance from London to Jamestown is 3732 miles or 6000 kilometers if the ship sailed directly. But they didn't sail in a straight line. They followed the trade winds in a counter clockwise circle going south along southern Europe then westward across the ocean. By using the trade winds the trip would be shorter in time even though longer in miles.

Of course, the main characters don't go directly from London to Jamestown - but we are getting ahead of our story.

London, England

Lion to Guard Us Map of England

London is the capital city of England and Great Britain, and the setting for the first ten chapters of the book.

Students will be interested to note the location of the town of Plymouth, from which the Sea Adventure was to set sail.

Streets of London

Lion to Guard Us Map Fish Street and Philpot Street

The opening scene of the book is an unnamed sailor walking across London Bridge. He had been looking for Fish Street, and here it was at the end of London Bridge."

And only a street over was Philpot Lane where Amanda visited the Virginia Company.

Bermuda Map

Sea Venture Wreck and Landing Sites

The map identifies the approximate location of the Sea Venture wreck, the landing site of the 150 people on board, the building sites of the Deliverance and Patience, and two alternative locations for Carter's cabin.

You can identify the location of Bermuda as the tiny dot on the world map above. They were fairly close to their destination when the storm hit.

Virginia, Jamestown and the Chesapeake Bay

Jamestown on the James River of Chesapeake Bay

Jamestown was 765 miles from Bermuda. The James River was the first river in Virginia after entering the Chesapeake Bay.

See below for a close up of the James River and Jamestown.

Jamestown and Comfort Point Fort

Jamestown and the fort and Point Comfort

Jamestown "is almost an island," said Captain Newport. Both the fort at Point Comfort and Jamestown are almost islands, surrounded on three sides by water and connected by a strip of land.

From Point Comfort to Jamestown is approximately 40 miles.
